About Us

The Royal Free is in the final stages of acquiring Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals. Subject to Secretary of State approval, it is expected the larger foundation trust will come into operation on 1 July 2014.

Clinicians and managers from both trusts have been looking together at how services can be provided more efficiently and effectively as one organisation. GPs and commissioners too have been involved from the start in discussing how services should best be delivered in the years ahead. A variety of clinical and other benefits is emerging. The expanded trust would employ approximately 9,000 staff and have an annual budget of over £800m.

The Trust’s established leadership team are well respected and the CEO, David Sloman, has recently been recognised by the HSJ as one of the 10 most influential and inspirational leaders in the NHS. The Director of Finance, Caroline Clarke, was awarded finance director of the year by HFMA in 2012 and leads on the Best Possible Value workstream for the national Future Focused Finance programme.

The Trust’s priorities are focused on making the expanded Trust a strong, safe organisation that provides world class care and expertise. Investment in infrastructure is crucial and the Trust recognises that the best outcomes for patients mean having staff whohave the resources and facilities they need to be the best. The plans are ambitious, but they have a strong track record of doing difficult things that improve the lives of patients and they plan to maintain that record of delivery. The challenge is to create an organisation that is clinically-led and excellently managed.  To do so, they aim to be patient focused, optimistic and do the difficult things that make a difference.

To support this vision, the Trust is making a significant investment in its combined finance team, ensuring that it has the capacity and skills to support and drive value in the organisation.  The new structure for the finance team is attached.
